Human infection with Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania viannia braziliensis (Lvb). A clinical perspective.

چکیده
These remarks are in English, the current lan guage of science, as Chinese, Arabic, Greek and Latin were in the past. My qualification for making them is that, apart from my general clinical and teaching duties, I have spent 25 years doing research on T. cruzi and 15 years on Lvb. I am a clinician first and a parasitologist second so that my research is applied to aspects pertaining to diagnosis, treatment and prevention. This classification is used in this discussion and among these six topics there has only been one great advance during my time, the control of Chagas’ disease in Brazil. Diagnostic techniques still lack sensitivity and precision and the drug companies have shown little interest in chemotherapy. For this reason I wanted to make some observations.

Use of full-length recombinant calflagin and its c fragment for improvement of diagnosis of Trypanosoma cruzi infection.
Serological diagnosis of Trypanosoma cruzi infection is hampered by issues related to test specificity due to the cross-reactivity of most antigens with proteins of related parasites such as Leishmania spp. The recombinant calflagins are considered relevant antigens for the diagnosis of infection by Trypanosoma cruzi. In the present work, we describe two genes coding for putative calflagins in ...
متن کاملEffect of Lutzomyia whitmani (Diptera: Psychodidae) salivary gland lysates on Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis infection in BALB/c mice.
Previous reports showed that Lutzomyia longipalpis saliva exacerbate Leishmania braziliensis infection in mice. The sand fly Lu. whitmani is one of the vectors of L. (Viannia) braziliensis (LVb), a causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the State of Ceará, Brazil. To determine whether saliva of Lu. whitmani could increase the infectivity of LVb in mice, we inoculated groups of BALB/c mic...

Parasites belonging to Leishmania braziliensis, Leishmania donovani, Leishmania mexicana complexes and Trypanosoma cruzi (clones 20 and 39) were searched in blood, lesions and strains collected from 28 patients with active cutaneous leishmaniasis and one patient with visceral leishmaniasis. PCR-hybridization with specific probes of Leishmania complexes (L. braziliensis, L. donovani and L. mexic...
متن کاملLeishmania (Viannia) braziliensis in dogs in Brazil: epidemiology, co-infection, and clinical aspects.
Leishmaniasis is an endemic disease present in 98 countries. In Brazil, the northeast region accounts for approximately half of the cases in humans, and has experienced an increased number of positive cases in dogs. In this study, we investigated the epidemiology of canine leishmaniasis in the city of Ilhéus, Bahia, using serological and molecular techniques and evaluated the possible environme...
متن کاملSingle-step multiplex PCR assay for characterization of New World Leishmania complexes.
We have developed a PCR assay for one-step differentiation of the three complexes of New World Leishmania (Leishmania braziliensis, Leishmania mexicana, and Leishmania donovani). This multiplex assay is targeted to the spliced leader RNA (mini-exon) gene repeats of these organisms and can detect all three complexes simultaneously, generating differently sized products for each complex. The assa...
